DIY Elegant Kratky

So this time around for the DIY, I'm kind of cheating by modifying something I bought....


Anyway, I was given this amazing giant amaryllis bulb in a vase with black stones for Christmas. The concept is pretty much a Kratky flower bulb. You simply add water and ignore it. This got me thinking about growing other plants, such as herbs, in the same fashion.

I set off to the craft store to replicate what I'd seen. All I needed to do it was a glass container and decorative rocks. I settled on a fish bowl with smooth, black rocks. And that's when the Kratky fishbowl was born:

Pure elegance. LOVED the way it looked. So much so that I went back to do a DIY for everyone. Removed the rocks, removed the plant, and started cleaning the bowl for its photo shoot. That's when a huge chunk of glass broke away from it, rendering it completely useless. :: sigh ::

I took a trip to the home improvement store and saw that hey had these amaryllis plants on clearance. So I decided to cheat and use the vase from these to build out a new home for a holy basil plant. Anyone familiar with this plant knows that it grows with a kind of perfect symmetry to it. It'll be perfect for the refined look I'm going for.

• Minimum Requirements:
• Rockwool
• Net pot that fits your container
• A glass container (make sure you get one with thick walls!)
• Decorative rocks

• How to:

1. Find a glass container with thick walls (it must hold a good amount of weight)

 2. Rinse out your rocks and clean your container 

3. Fill the container with enough rocks to let the plant roots grow down about 4-6 inches 

4. Bury your net pot up to the rim 

5. Put a small layer of rocks on the bottom of the net pot 

6. Drop a few seeds into the rockwool, put the rockwool in the net pot, and back fill with rocks (leave the hole where the seeds go uncovered so the seedlings can get out) 

7. Fill the container with reverse osmosis or filtered water until it reaches the bottom of the rockwool
